Over the Hills (and Far Away) (Year)
Pen ink and acrylic on canvas with wooden floating frame
82 × 102 × 76 cm
This work forms part of a limited-edition collection and is the second piece in the series to introduce colour through a more traditional canvas format, with the imagery continuing beyond the canvas and onto its floating frame. Inspired in part by the story of Alan Kurdi, the work reflects on the impact of war and displacement on children and families. The familiar straight lines of the cityscape are replaced by a fragmented zig-zag landscape, echoing the chaos and and instability of conflict, while the images of the ducks in the distant connects the piece to the Five Little Ducks series. The work reflects on the barriers that separate people from safety and opportunity, while holding onto the hope of a better future.
